Children at Wyre Forest School are swinging into action in all weathers at Churchill & Blakedown Golf Club thanks to a new covered driving bay funded by ladies’ captain Judy Perry.

Pupils from Year 10 helped officially unveil the new range alongside Judy, head PGA professional Angus Hoare and club captain Bob Julier.

The bay will also be used by the Odell Centre in Kidderminster which is a recreational centre for adults with disabilities and mental health issues.

“Angus was already coaching in the community and I thought it would be nice to have a facility in-house at the club so people could come and enjoy the fresh air and have a go at golf,” said Judy.

“I’m familiar from personal experience how difficult it is to integrate people with special needs into everyday life so hopefully this can be a great asset both for the club and the community.”

Golf at Churchill & Blakdeown is already playing a pivotal role for the Year 10 pupils at Wyre Forest School, who are regularly visitors, with their golfing experiences going towards their ASDAN accreditation which is an access course.

Teacher Sian Ireson said: “For a lot of the pupils coming to golf is a new experience, it is all about getting them into the community, learning to take instruction from new people, trusting each other, understanding safety rules. It is an experience to go home and talk about which a lot struggle with. We’re having some amazing feedback from parents from their children sharing their experiences of golf.”

Club captain Bob Julier added: “Building the covered range is a marvellous gesture by Judy and not only will it be used by Wyre Forest School and the Odell Centre but members will also benefit and it is another step in the continuing improvement of the club.”

Judy paid a special thanks to another club member Adrian Aston for his efforts in helping the facility get off the ground.
